If you’ve ever updated your WordPress website and suddenly seen the message “Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute,” you may wonder what happened to your website.
The good news is that this usually isn’t a serious problem. WordPress automatically puts a website into maintenance mode while it is updating WordPress, plugins, or themes. Normally, this message only appears for a short time and disappears once the update is complete.
However, if an update is interrupted or something goes wrong during the process, your website can sometimes get stuck in maintenance mode.
Why Does This Happen?
When WordPress starts an update, it creates a small maintenance file in the website’s main directory. This temporarily prevents visitors from accessing the website while the update is being completed.
If the update doesn’t finish properly, that file may remain on the server. As a result, your website continues displaying the maintenance message even though the update is already finished.
This can happen because of an interrupted update, a server timeout, a connection problem, or another issue during the WordPress update process.
How to Fix the WordPress Maintenance Error
Fortunately, removing the maintenance message is usually quite simple.
You need to access your website’s files using your hosting control panel’s File Manager or an FTP client. Once you’re inside the main WordPress installation directory, look for a file named .maintenance.
Delete this file and then reload your website.
In most cases, your website should immediately come out of maintenance mode and start working normally again.
If you still experience problems after removing the file, check whether the WordPress, plugin, or theme update that caused the issue was completed successfully. You may need to run the update again.
